Canada Backs Off-Grid Farming Innovation in the Yukon
In a bold move to reinforce northern food security, the Canadian government has earmarked C$305,000 for a pioneering off-grid hydroponic farming initiative in the Yukon.
The project is part of a broader C$1.6 million investment announced in March 2025, designed to strengthen regional food systems across remote communities. With its harsh climate and logistical challenges, the Yukon is an ideal testing ground for self-sustaining agricultural solutions.
Hydroponic technology-growing plants without soil-has the potential to deliver fresh produce year-round, even in the North's long, dark winters. This funding signals Ottawa's commitment to building resilient, climate-adaptive food networks far beyond Canada's urban centers.
The initiative is expected to serve as a model for other remote regions seeking to reduce dependence on food imports and create sustainable local supply chains.
