Mint in a Hydroponic System
Short Description
Mint (Mentha spp.) is a fast-growing aromatic herb known for its refreshing scent and flavor. In hydroponics, mint thrives in a variety of systems, producing lush foliage for culinary, medicinal, and aromatic uses.
Varieties
- Peppermint: 'Black Mitcham' (Mentha × piperita 'Black Mitcham')
- Spearmint: 'Kentucky Colonel' (Mentha spicata 'Kentucky Colonel')
- Apple Mint: 'Berggarten' (Mentha suaveolens 'Berggarten')
- Chocolate Mint: 'Mitcham Chocolate' (Mentha × piperita 'Mitcham Chocolate')
- Moroccan Mint: 'Mentha spicata var. crispa'
- Water Mint (Mentha aquatica)
- Ginger Mint: 'Mentha × gracilis'
Positive Identification
- Opposite, ovate leaves with serrated margins
- Square, hair-covered stems (typical of Lamiaceae)
- Strong, cooling mint aroma when leaves are crushed
- Leaves often display light green to dark green hues; some cultivars have purple tinges
- Small pale purple or white flowers in terminal spikes
Toxic Look-Alikes
- Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) - related but contains toxic pulegone
- Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) - similar leaf shape, highly toxic alkaloids
- Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata) - leaf shape can mimic mint; deadly
- Japanese Knotweed shoots (Fallopia japonica) - early shoots superficially similar
